Jacob Van Oosterhout

Chemistry Teacher

Jacob is a passionate and enthusiastic science teacher from the United States. He co-authored the cover article for the Royal Society of Chemistry’s Chemical Science journal while earning his BS in chemistry at the University of Michigan, then focused on chemical education while obtaining a MS in chemistry at the University of Wisconsin. After gaining teaching credentials in secondary chemistry, he taught for two years in an inner-city school in Michigan before moving to Singapore, where he has taught chemistry and physics for the past three years.

Jacob believes in creating a supportive, nurturing classroom environment to leverage students’ curiosity in the world around them and develop the inquiry and questioning skills to explain complex phenomena. Through a metacognitive approach, Jacob enjoys guiding students to learn not just the content for examinations, but how to think like a chemist, and use a chemist’s approach to solving problems outside of the sciences.

In his free time, Jacob enjoys exploring Singapore with his family, chasing after his two young daughters, and sharing his enthusiasm about chemistry and science to all within earshot.
